PRI's 10 Year Blueprint: Transforming the Financial System for Sustainability

Read: 1259

We at the PRI recognize that today's financial system is not operating sustnably and often falls short of serving society. Our mission is to reshape this system in order to support sustnable economic development, which involves understanding and challenging the barriers that hinder its sustnability.

As part of our strategic priorities outlined in our 10-Year Blueprint, we are collaborating with investors, policymakers, regulators, and other stakeholders within the financial sector. Our focus is on identifying market practices, structures, and actors within the system that need to be addressed to transform it into a sustnable one. This involves addressing nine key conditions:

  1. Aligning investment objectives with long-term sustnability goals

  2. Ensuring that beneficiary interests are at the forefront of decision-making processes

  3. Encouraging policymakers to influence market practices towards sustnability

  4. Preventing government policies from being influenced by vested interests

  5. Reducing the power held by brokers, rating agencies, advisors, and consultants over investment decisions

  6. Addressing principal-agent issues in the investment chn

  7. Challenging financialization and rent-seeking behaviors among market participants

  8. Promoting sustnable outcomes in credit risk assessment and ratings

  9. Improving integration of environmental, social, and governance ESG factors into investment strategies

One such initiative is our Investment Consultants Services Review which bring about a common language between investors and consultants on ESG risks, facilitating the alignment of these issues with portfolio performance.

Another key area is our focus on credit risk and ratings. We are fostering dialogue among rating agencies and investors to create a shared understanding of how ESG factors impact creditworthiness.

To tackle these challenges effectively, we also engage closely with actors across the financial system such as investment consultants, asset owners, rating agencies, and policymakers:

  1. Investment Consultants Services Review: Enhancing awareness and integration of ESG issues within consulting practices.

  2. Building the Sustnable Investment Bank of the Future: Empowering financial institutions to play a leading role in promoting sustnable finance.

  3. CRA Initiative: Improving transparency and accountability through a more robust credit rating system that incorporates sustnability metrics.

  4. SSE Initiative: Strengthening corporate environmental, social, and governance disclosures.
